Public Holiday – May 1st May Day (International Labour Day)
The May Day, also known as Labour Day, is an International holiday celebrated in many countries on the first of May. It is a public holiday in most countries, and it usually celebrates the social and economic achievements of workers.
In India, May Day marks the end of spring harvest. It is also a public holiday and is celebrated with great pomp and show all over India by various socio-religious organizations.
History of Labour Day
The first Labor Day was held on September 5, 1882 in New York City. It was a day for the working class to celebrate their work and accomplishments. The idea of celebrating labor came from the Central Labor Union which wanted to promote solidarity among workers and give them a sense of dignity and respect.
In India, the first May Day was celebrated on May 1, 1923, in then Madras. It was organised by the Labour Kisan Party of Hindustan. More than 80 countries, including India, observe this day.
