Gandhi Jayanti is a government holiday in India, which is observed on October 2. The day commemorates the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, who was born on October 2, 1869.
Mahatma Gandhi was a spiritual and political leader of Indian independence movement against British rule. He became the most prominent figure in India’s struggle for independence and he led the country to independence from Britain in 1947.
Gandhi Jayanti is celebrated as a national holiday in India. It is an official public holiday under Article 23 of Constitution of India that provides for “the right to work”.
